Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shindler, South Dakota. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair testing and have numerous testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing preferences.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly replaced traditional methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers uphold zero-tolerance drug policies using these tests, as do courts and those on probation. The primary advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, which can reach 90 days. They also follow a supervised collection process, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate when detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair holds a long-term record of ethanol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug use. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original sample and set aside for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower levels than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Results of positive screenings undergo confirmation using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The full process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating in a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage insight: It illustrates drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
