Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Stamford, South Dakota. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we provide services at testing centers nationwide, covering all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for testing in recent years. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies towards drugs and by courts managing probation cases. The main advantage is a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, ensuring a secure and nearly impossible-to-alter testing process. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer insight into alcohol and drug use over a span of up to three months. Its collection is uncomplicated, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and shipping is convenient.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment from around 200 hair strands near the scalp, roughly the size of a #2 pencil, yields 100mg of hair—optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional panels, or more comprehensive screening above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's preferable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term ‘head hair’ specifically denotes scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ applies to all alternative types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result typically encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for the presence of abuse substances. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples at a lower cost, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening mandate subsequent validation.

In instances where Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumed positive samples are cleansed as required prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower timeframe.
  • Difficult to circumvent: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical consumption patterns: It reveals drug use patterns over a time range, not just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug detection techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
