Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Toronto, South Dakota. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, offering facilities in cities across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is necessary. Hair tests are capable of analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other bespoke testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are demanding hair drug tests in lieu of conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation rely on hair follicle tests, primarily due to their extended drug detection window up to 90 days, their stringent collection process, and their resistance to falsification. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice due to higher precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. A sample taken close to the scalp can offer a detection period of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to alter, and simple to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch lock of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment to detect drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient way to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory protocol is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably tough to manipulate, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historic data provision: Offers a record of drug usage over time, not limited to recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It approximately takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
