Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing across Troy, South Dakota. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have testing centers in cities nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other customized testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. These are preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and for probation monitoring. Their advantage includes a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection, making them hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended history of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the fibers as hair grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period for alcohol and drugs of up to around three months. It's easy to collect hair, somewhat challenging to tamper with it, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp amounts to 100mg, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a comparable weight of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types, like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a lab's system, including verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for drugs. It is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, but a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening need further verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair screening challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples receive washing before necessary Confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair stipulations and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: Offers a chronological record of drug consumption, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
