Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing solutions in Tulare, South Dakota. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers span across all cities nationwide. For most cases, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Our services include drug, alcohol/ETG, and other custom test options.

Hair follicle tests have become a preferred method in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation programs by offering an extended detection window of up to 90 days, using monitored sample collection, reducing the chance to cheat. For recent drug use within five days, urine tests still provide more accurate data.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will weigh around 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This process involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for abusive substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, any positive results need to be verified to be viable in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For samples that return a presumptive positive in the Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are removed from hair in this stage at much reduced concentrations than in other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presuming positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although the term "hair follicle tests" is common, the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
