Accredited Drug Testing delivers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Volga, South Dakota. For those requiring hair or alcohol screening, we are adept in this domain with testing facilities available nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is generally needed for testing. Hair analyses cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over traditional methods. Companies, courts, and substance abuse specialists increasingly opt for hair tests, sidelining urine assessments. This method is favored in places with stringent drug policies, such as workplaces and courts. Hair tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making them almost tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests still reign supreme.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a longer-term history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, only somewhat susceptible to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or cases involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal four stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial task of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to stand in court. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is highly complex to carry out.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical usage: It offers a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs reach detectable levels in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing emerges as a superior option compared to urine tests in Volga, SD. The ability to detect substances over an extended period increases its appeal to employers and professionals. Unlike urine tests that assess short-term use, hair testing provides a comprehensive overview, thereby enhancing detection accuracy and reliability.

The advantages of hair testing lie in its robustness. The extended testing window allows it to capture a broader spectrum of usage, minimizing the chances of evasive behavior. Furthermore, the meticulous collection and analysis processes hold substantial weight in ensuring dependable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
