Accredited Drug Testing brings comprehensive hair follicle drug testing to Wewela, South Dakota. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair, our organization excels in this service, with centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair may suffice. Hair testing can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as per requirement.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become an increasingly preferred method for drug detection. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation-related individuals frequently use hair follicle tests, primarily due to the extended 90-day detection period, supervised sample collection, and minimal risk of manipulation, though urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shafts. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage on the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result's Confirmation is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides chronological information: It can reveal a trend of drug use over an interval, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is executed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
