Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug screening in Algood, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers across all cities in the nation for your convenience. Typically, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, mostly from the crown, for testing purposes. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a common method in drug screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse counselors now often demand this over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is especially favored by companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and for those on probation. Its main advantage is the longer drug use detection window, usually up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making it hard to tamper with. However, the urine test remains the top choice for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, complementary assays, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick assessment for abuse of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to negate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening do require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection timeframe: Hair drug exams can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine exams that feature a smaller detection period.
  • Resistant to deception: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It furnishes a pattern of drug usage spanning a timeline, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug exams generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Algood, TN, surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy. Enhanced Detection: Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers a longer detection window, capturing a broader history of drug use. Unmatched Reliability: It eliminates the risks of false negatives commonly associated with urine tests, making it the preferred choice for many.

Extended Detection Window

Comprehensive Insights: Detecting usage up to 90 days, this method is invaluable for assessing long-term habits. Broad Detection: It provides a more complete view than other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employers in Algood, TN, benefit from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing. Reduced Adulteration Risk: The hair test's method significantly minimizes the chance of sample tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
