In Johnson City, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in this testing method, with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, hair from the crown or body, approximately 1.5 to 2 inches long, is required.Hair assessments can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or diverse testing customizations.

Hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly used in recent years as a method for drug analysis, commonly replacing the standard urine test by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts. This testing method is recommended for organizations with no drug tolerance, courts, and probationary individuals. Its key benefit lies in its extensive detection timeframe, spanning up to 90 days, done through a monitored process, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within a five-day range.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair can offer a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection reach of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch selection of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair covers all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drug presence. While it serves as a cost-effective method to identify drug use in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmations of positive screening outcomes are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is greatly challenging, ensuring more credible results.
  • Tracks past consumption: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing avenues.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examinations target the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
