In Allardt, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. If you seek a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing with facilities in every city across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer this over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-use rules and those in legal systems favor this method for its long detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with collection observed directly, making it hard to falsify. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its growing fibers, offering a comprehensive history of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeline of alcohol and drug exposure. This method is easy to collect, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is needed to yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, or tests requiring more than 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into a lab's system. This step entails verifying that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry needed beyond what is provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means of excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation test.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing has a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to evade: Evading a hair drug test is immensely difficult, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can depict a drug use pattern over a span of time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs typically require 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing excels over urine tests in Allardt, TN due to its enhanced detection capabilities. While urine tests cover a shorter window, hair tests offer broader substance use analysis.

Urine tests may falter in accuracy, but hair follicle testing assures unparalleled detection reliability, helping employers maintain stricter zero-tolerance standards.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
