Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Altamont, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation, including every city, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, you'll need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, though body hair may also be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various custom testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and those working with substance abuse cases are now opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers who uphold strict no-drug-use policies, as well as courts and probation officers. The key advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, along with a supervised collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Detecting drug and alcohol consumption through hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in its growing fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about three months. The collection process is straightforward, making the hair difficult to tamper with, and it is easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch hair sample comprised of approximately 200 strands closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test in four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a quick initial check for drugs. Though it is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result in screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a positive is detected during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are then extracted from hair at much lower levels than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation when needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus ensuring result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can establish a timeline of drug use, showing patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rate differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
