Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Apison, Tennessee. Specializing in hair testing, we provide services nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests for drugs or alcohol using 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. These tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug screenings, favored by employers, legal systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse, over traditional urine tests. Organizations value these tests for their extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation to prevent tampering. However, urine testing remains unmatched for identifying very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the strand grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect hair samples, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test processing in a laboratory involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a laboratory's database. This step confirms the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although it’s a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in many samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be considered valid in a legal setting. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides a history: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent habits.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drug presence takes about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing process examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Apison, TN, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are clear. Hair testing boasts superior detection accuracy, capturing drug use up to 90 days. This extended window offers a comprehensive physiological history, unmatched by urine testing.

Whereas urine tests only detect recent use, hair tests are tamper-resistant and demonstrate reliability. Hair screening reflects long-term substance usage, giving employers key insights into an individual’s habits.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key strengths of hair follicle testing in Apison, TN, is the extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This extensive period allows employers to gain deeper insights into an individual’s drug history.

With hair testing, employers can review an applicant’s or employee’s substance use over a longer timeline, ensuring informed decision-making regarding employment suitability and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Apison, TN, hair follicle testing stands out for its tamper-resistant qualities. Unlike other testing methods, hair sampling significantly reduces the chance of sample adulteration.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
