Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Baxter, Tennessee. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol screening, our center offers expertise in hair analysis across all cities nationwide. Typically, hair from the scalp—1.5 to 2 inches long—or body suffices for testing purposes. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug test procedures. It's increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial institutions, and those on probation favor hair tests for their extensive detection capacity that spans up to 90 days. While near-impossible to adulterate, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized for its effectiveness in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a detection period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil, located nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair includes other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory analysis of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the specimen's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening carries out a preliminary swift analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must receive confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples receiving positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

In case of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage entails drawing out drugs from hair in significantly lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, which is a key reason hair drug screening is considered challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a wash as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process is scrutinized under both the Hair designation by CAP (College of American Pathologists) and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to fake, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug activity over a duration, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically carry higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variance: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence the amount of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
