Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in Beech Creek, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty in hair testing paired with testing centers across all cities nationwide can facilitate your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are required. Hair analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug tests has grown in popularity. Numerous workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle tests. The chief advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly cheat-proof. Yet, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers in the strands as they grow, offering a historical record of alcohol and drug intake. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for substances. The sample is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil diameter) from the closest point to the scalp results in a 100mg hair collection, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introductory processing of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This stage includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift verification for substance misuse. Although a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result in Screening requires validation for court admissibility. Any samples initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate process.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation, as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug testing is generally more expensive than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
