Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Berry Hill, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, turn to Accredited Drug Testing who specializes in hair tests. With centers in cities Nationwide, we conduct hair testing efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases. A key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly foolproof against tampering. However, for the most accurate screening of recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing prevails.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a span of roughly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panel testing, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s processing system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods such as urine or oral fluid. This complexity adds to the challenge of performing hair drug testing.

Positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use over 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection timeline.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, thus offering more reliable results.
  • Reflects historical usage: It provides insight into a pattern of drug use across time, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Berry Hill, TN stands out when compared to traditional urine tests. Superior detection accuracy ensures substances are effectively identified, enhancing reliability. Hair tests provide a broader detection window, capturing a history of drug use over 90 days. This broader scope is ideal for employers, offering a clearer picture of potential substance abuse trends.

Traditional urine tests miss longer substance histories, falling short in accuracy over time. Hair tests, with their precision detection, confidently back employers who uphold stringent drug-free workplace policies. By offering superior accuracy, hair testing forms a cornerstone for rigorous workplace substance policies.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Berry Hill, TN is its extended detection window. Unlike traditional testing methods, hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, offering employers comprehensive insight into a candidate's or employee's substance use history.

This longer detection period enables organizations to make informed decisions based on substantial evidence of past behaviors. The expansive timeline ensures that employers don't miss critical patterns of substance use that might affect workplace performance and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Berry Hill, TN are renowned for being tamper-resistant, significantly reducing the risks associated with sample adulteration. The nature of hair testing makes it nearly impossible for individuals to alter or manipulate samples, offering reliable results every time.

This method's resistance to tampering provides unquestionable results that cannot be easily disputed. Employers and legal bodies can confidently rely on hair tests to deliver accurate outcomes, improving the integrity of drug testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
