Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Blountville, Tennessee. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers across the country, including all cities, specialize in hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. These tests suit employers with strict no-drug policies and those under legal supervision. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making evasion nearly impossible. Still, urine tests remain the most precise for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage up to around a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will supply 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional analyses, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When the term head hair is used, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of the sample within the lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that isn't captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial cursory check for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria alongside the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It’s extremely challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Gives historical insight: It provides a record of drug utilization over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is generally costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine analysis in Blountville, TN, the advantages are clear. Hair testing boasts a longer detection period, offering better accuracy and reliability. Its ability to detect substance use up to 90 days provides a comprehensive insight, unlike urine tests which are limited to detecting only recent use.

Employers favor hair follicle tests for their dependability. While urine tests are still used, the chance for error is greater, making hair testing a superior choice for thorough substance screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Blountville, TN, stands out for its extended detection window. Unlike traditional tests, it effectively detects past substance use up to 90 days. This long history review helps employers gain a full understanding of an individual's substance use behavior.

With a longer detection period, hair tests allow for a more complete picture of drug use. This is ideal for employers who require thorough background checks, ensuring a more dependable hiring process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Blountville, TN, hair follicle tests significantly mitigate the risk of tampering. Their design makes sample adulteration nearly impossible, guaranteeing authentic results. This reliability is crucial for businesses requiring full confidence in their test outcomes.

Unlike traditional tests, hair follicle analysis is collected under strict supervision, further reducing tampering opportunities and ensuring the integrity of the sample every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
