Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Bluff City, Tennessee. We are experts in hair testing, providing testing locations across major cities Nationwide. For a valid hair test, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the scalp or body is often required. Substances ranging from drugs to alcohol/ETG can be detected, with options for custom hair analysis available.

In the past few years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now often favor it over traditional urine tests. This test is especially vital for employers with strict no-drug policies, court mandates, or individuals under probation. The standout advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, while being secure from tampering. However, testing for usage within a five-day window continues to rely on urine tests for peak accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair analysis can reveal alcohol or drug exposure within an approximately 90-day timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more extensive panels beyond 10 drugs, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is recommended. In scenarios where scalp hair is absent, an equal volume of body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. Conversely, "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug-testing sample is comprised of four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving the integration of a sample into the laboratory's workflow. It encompasses ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data entry needs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-efficient assessment to check for drug presence. While effective for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive result from Screening necessitates further confirmation to be considered valid in legal contexts. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptively positive results during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

The Confirmation process for any presumptively positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process as necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: This method can establish a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just identifying recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable within hair strands.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates may influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
