Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Briceville, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis and operate testing facilities in every city nationwide, equipped to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair samples are able to be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted for screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors prefer hair drug tests to traditional urine analysis. Such tests are favored in workplaces with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for individuals on supervised release. The key advantage is their extended detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, conducted through observed collection, making deception nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair offers a detailed history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, fairly challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially processing a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial fast check for drug abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, court admissibility requires confirming a positive screen. Any samples testing positive presumptively in Screening need secondary confirmation.

A presumptive positive sample in Screening will have more hair taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methodologies to perform.

All positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It indicates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days after drug intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Briceville, TN Undoubtedly, hair follicle drug tests surpass the more conventional urine tests in numerous ways. One of the most significant advantages is their capacity for longer detection periods, offering comprehensive insight into a person’s drug use history over a span of several months rather than days, which is typical with urine tests.

Additionally, hair follicle testing is less vulnerable to manipulation compared to urine testing, where sample adulteration is a common concern. This makes hair testing a superior choice for maintaining rigorous and accurate drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Briceville, TN The ability of hair follicle testing to detect drug use up to 90 days from the date of consumption provides employers with an extensive window for evaluation. By choosing this method, companies in Briceville can acquire a more detailed look into an employee or applicant's substance history, ensuring the maintenance of safe and productive work environments.

This extended detection period aids employers in making informed decisions, as it highlights not just recent but also past patterns of drug use, contributing to better hiring practices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Briceville, TN Hair follicle testing significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, offering a high level of reliability and authenticity. In contrast to other testing methods, such as urine, it is extremely difficult to alter or falsify results, thus securing the integrity of the testing process.

This high degree of tamper resistance ensures that the outcomes are trustworthy, providing Briceville employers with the peace of mind that they are basing workplace decisions on accurate information.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
