Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Buffalo Valley, Tennessee. Whether you require hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, with facilities available in numerous cities across the country that can carry out such analyses. Typically, you'll need between 1.5 and 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored for other specific tests.

In recent developments, conducting drug assessments increasingly involves hair follicle testing. It's becoming a preference for employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine test. This method is favored by companies with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and those overseeing individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is a significantly extended detection window for substance usage, typically reaching up to 90 days, collected through a monitored process, making it almost immune to manipulation. Nonetheless, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine analysis remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of misuse. Though Screening serves as an economical method to negate drug presence in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Presumed positive samples in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of each positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, delivering more precise results.
  • Yields historical data: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
