In Campaign, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers a thorough hair follicle drug testing service. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise shines in hair testing with centers available nationwide for your convenience. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown, or elsewhere on the body. Analyses include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has grown in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probationary programs, favor hair tests due to their extended detection range, offering approximately a 90-day usage history, observed collection processes, and minimal risk of tampering. However, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use, particularly within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extended retrospective view of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the head, hair can provide up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s balance. If head hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This entails confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substance of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples with a preliminary positive result in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is a particularly challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug utilization over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
