In Cedar Grove, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our centers nationwide are equipped to conduct specialized hair tests for drugs, alcohol, and other custom options. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on the crown or body for analysis purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is valued for its extended detection window of drug use up to 90 days, its supervised collection process, and its resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain most effective for recent drug activity within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is recommended to use 150mg of the specimen. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equal volume of body hair can be collected. When head hair is mentioned, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Steps in the Process

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. It entails checking if the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a quick preliminary examination for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be court-admissible. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening need another confirmation step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect for a shorter period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are hard to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage history: They can show a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent use only.

Constraints:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test assesses the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
