Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Christiana, Tennessee. Our expertise in hair testing includes a vast network of locations across the country, allowing us to efficiently conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient. Hair testing can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug screening practices. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. This shift is due to the extended detection periods, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior. Hair tests are collected under supervision, minimizing the chances of tampering, but urine tests remain optimal for recent, within-the-last-five-days drug detection.

What it is, How it works

The identification of alcohol and drug use via hair testing has gained reputation as an impactful method. Hair locks in biomarkers within its growing fibers, providing an extended historical record of substance use. With collection near the scalp, hair can evidence alcohol or drug intake for approximately a 3-month period. The procurement of hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term "head hair" exclusively denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other varieties including facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory sequence for processing drug test results includes four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This stage involves ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that isn't pre-recorded through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails conducting a preliminary scan for drug substances. Although a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most specimens, a positive screen result necessitates further confirmation for legal acceptance. Specimens showing presumptive positivity during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen be found presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores the complexity of hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptively positive specimens is conducted before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards pursuant to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, superior to the lesser detection spans of urine tests.
  • Minimal cheating potential: The accuracy of hair drug test results is enhanced due to the difficulty of deceit.
  • Historical use tracking: It reveals a chronological pattern of substance use over time, beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to alternate testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," these evaluations analyze solely the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
