Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Church Hill, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we have facilities in various cities across the nation to carry out such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. We provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other hair testing options.

In the past years, hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity as a method for drug screening. An increasing number of employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests in lieu of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are trusted by organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal courts, and probationary bodies. The key advantage of this method is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, usually up to 90 days, making it difficult to manipulate the results, although urine tests remain more accurate for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window for identifying alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When addressing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Step-by-Step Overview

The lab processing of a drug testing result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This consists of ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift examination for drug presence. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result must be substantiated for court admissibility. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate an additional verification.

If a sample is initially positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab course from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical consumption: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is advantageous in Church Hill, TN due to its superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests. It provides a longer detection window, allowing for better identification of drug use, and is less invasive. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
