Located in Clairfield, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. As specialists in hair testing, we provide testing services across the country, including various cities nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary; however, body hair can also be used. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor this over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation commonly utilize hair follicle drug tests. The significant advantage is its extended detection window for drug usage, offering insight up to 90 days, all collected through a supervised process, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting immediate prior drug usage, typically within five days, the urine test remains more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended historical record for alcohol and other drugs. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug presence for a period of up to about 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample is initially integrated into the laboratory system. Tasks include confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data capture not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an efficient preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening economically eliminates the possibility of drug use in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a subsequent confirmation stage.

For samples that test presumptive positive at the Screening level, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drug compounds are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation where applicable. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidelines set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect drug intake for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the reliability of its outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: There is an approximate 5-7 day period required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clairfield, TN, hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests. This superior method offers greater detection accuracy and ensures more reliable results. By revealing substance use for up to 90 days, it provides a more comprehensive analysis than urine testing.

The reliability of hair follicle tests over urine tests lies in their extended detection period. With more robust data on drug use history, employers can make better assessments of an individual's lifestyle choices and potential impact in the workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Clairfield, TN, offers an extended detection window, capturing a 90-day history of substance use. This method gives employers critical insight into the full scope of an applicant or employee's drug history, enhancing informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
