Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Clifton, Tennessee. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we boast nationwide centers ready to administer these tests across all cities. To undergo a hair test, you generally need hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body. Our hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests to standard urine tests. This choice supports zero-tolerance policies, court-mandated testing, and probation requirements. The main advantage of hair follicle tests lies in their longer detection window, covering up to 90 days. This process is conducted under observation, minimizing test evasion. However, urine tests surpass hair tests in detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in growing hair strands encapsulate biomarkers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal usage within a roughly 3-month span. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of about 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of specimens is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair includes other types like facial, axillary, and more.

Process Overview

The four fundamental phases in laboratory processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry tasks not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While it's a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive screening result must be verified for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screening the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The whole process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus making the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug use over time and not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
