Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Clinchmore, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we excel in hair testing, with facilities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your scalp or body, for most examinations. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the trend in drug testing methods has increasingly favored hair follicle analyses. This approach is preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests serve organizations with strict drug-free policies and those on probation. Their key advantage lies in detecting drug use over a lengthy period, up to 90 days, reducing the chance of tampering. Nevertheless, for drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a vital resource for recognizing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers into the fiber of the developing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer up to a three-month detection window for substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently shippable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional criteria, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the hair specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be collected. When referring to head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for drug test results consist of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. It involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, creating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any other necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a low-cost method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result must be validated to be permissible in legal cases. All presumptively positive samples during Screening need additional verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Positive screening outcomes go through Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a pre-confirmation cleanse if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards alongside the ISO / IEC 17025 accredited protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Efforts to deceive hair drug tests are extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: It can reflect a timeline of drug usage rather than limit to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Detection in hair generally occurs after 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expenses: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests focus on analyzing the hair shaft rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests due to its extended detection window and steadfast accuracy. While urine tests provide a snapshot of recent substance use, hair analyses reveal a broader spectrum, highlighting behaviors over the past few months. This comprehensive outlook allows for more informed decisions in Clinchmore, TN, enhancing the reliability of workplace drug screenings.

The capability of hair follicle tests to detect a range of substances with superior accuracy ensures lesser susceptibility to deceit than urine tests. These comparisons underscore the value of expanding testing regimens to include hair assessments, particularly in stringent work environments demanding no tolerance for drug use.

Extended Detection Window

In Clinchmore, TN, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This broad timeframe enables employers to gain a detailed understanding of drug patterns over time, rather than the mere recent snapshots provided by other methods. Employing this strategy ensures that long-term substance use doesn't go unnoticed, fostering a healthy workplace.

Hair tests offer the ability to detect various substances comprehensively, making them a powerful tool for employers aiming to maintain drug-free environments. The long detection window also assists in making informed decisions about applicants and current employees, safeguarding company policies and cultures.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Clinchmore, TN, is its inherent tamper-resistant quality. Given that altering hair samples is considerably challenging, this method ensures results remain trustworthy. The collection process itself discourages any form of sample substitution or adulteration, providing great reliability to employers and institutions.

The robustness of hair follicle testing against tampering ensures that the integrity of drug testing practices is maintained. By minimizing potential avenues for deception, employers can confidently rely on the results to make crucial employment decisions, promoting a culture of trust and integrity within the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
