Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Collegedale, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and offer centers across all cities Nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for conducting drug screenings. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are preferred for zero-tolerance policies by employers, courts, and for those on probation. The key advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a robust mechanism for identifying the consumption of substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair can offer a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fiber composition of growing hair strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection span of roughly up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and facilitates easy transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which constitutes the ideal quantity for both preliminary screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be procured. When referencing head hair, it precisely denotes scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies appropriate sealing and shipping of samples, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry tasks absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening comprises an immediate preliminary check for substance misuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drugs in most samples, a positive screen requires validation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate confirmatory testing.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed as necessary. The collective laboratory journey from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection time frame.
  • Resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical usage insight: It can reveal usage patterns over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assay focuses on hair strands, not on the follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
