Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Corryton, Tennessee. Whether you need a drug or alcohol test through hair analysis, we are experts in this field with testing locations in every city across the country that can conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle testing more frequently. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the common urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use rules, court systems, and those on probation often rely on hair drug tests. The biggest advantage of this method is its extended detection timeline for drug use, typically up to 90 days, with results collected through an observed process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for drug usage within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage history spanning roughly three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. The process of hair collection is straightforward, manipulation is relatively challenging, and transport is easy.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional screenings, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent quantities of body hair may be utilized. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing includes four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is processed into the laboratory’s database. This phase ensures that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and enters any additional data not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for controlled substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly method for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be verified to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a particularly complex process.

Confirmation for any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to compromise: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to manipulation, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They provide a record of drug consumption spanning a period, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination is conducted on the hair strand itself and not on the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
