Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cumberland City, Tennessee. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and those supervising probationers. A significant advantage is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, alongside the stringent collection process that minimizes cheating risks. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer optimal accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective measure for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can provide an alcohol and drug detection timeline of up to 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) from the closest point to the scalp will yield about 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. It is advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean hair from the scalp only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary processing into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase performs a quick initial check for substance abuse. While this is an economical approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive screens must be confirmed for court admissibility. If any samples return presumptively positive results during Screening, they necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found with other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes takes place using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, which is longer than urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to tampering, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can illustrate drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Cumberland City, TN, the former offers superior detection capabilities. Hair testing boasts a longer detection period and is less susceptible to manipulation. Unlike urine tests, hair samples provide a more reliable and comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use history, ensuring that employers receive the most accurate information available.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is lauded in Cumberland City, TN, for its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This feature is invaluable for employers, providing a thorough overview of a subject's substance history. By analyzing hair samples, organizations gain insights into long-term consumption patterns, crucial for making informed hiring or disciplinary decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing in Cumberland City, TN. The method significantly decreases the likelihood of sample adulteration, ensuring that results remain accurate and beyond reproach. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
