In Cumberland Heights, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair analysis, our centers across various cities nationwide perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for testing. Results can indicate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor to specific hair test needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has surged in preference over recent years, overshadowing urine tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly recommend hair tests for their stringent zero-tolerance policies. Distinguished by a lengthy 90-day detection period, these tests are conducted under strict observation and are largely immune to tampering, though urine remains preferable for recent (within 5 days) detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term drug and alcohol use history by containing biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement of the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for lab processing of a drug test result consists of four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial test for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening proves to be the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved through the use of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher due to the difficulty in cheating the test.
  • Displays usage history: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
