Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Daus, Tennessee. Whether a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is expert in hair assessments, with testing facilities located in every city across the nation, including hair assessment capabilities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for testing. These hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options as needed.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly integrated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance misuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine screenings. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers often employ hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage is its extended drug detection window, often up to 90 days, with collection under supervision, rendering cheating nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use, specifically in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded now as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol consumption and drug use. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal a detection timeframe of nearly three months for substances. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it is convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or instances involving more than ten panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other variations (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test incorporates four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system occurs. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While economical for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive arises in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening the hardest to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening positive involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. Every step of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review, abiding by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter duration.
  • Cheating challenge: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical perspective: It depicts a prolonged pattern of drug consumption rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent use limitation: It usually takes 5-7 days before drugs are detectable within hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color, along with individual hair growth traits, may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
