Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dibrell, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in these tests with centers nationwide, ready to conduct a hair evaluation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts advocate for hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation often prefer hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, often up to 90 days. The collection is supervised, making it challenging to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures alcohol and other drug markers within its fibers, offering a long-term record. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use history for a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands (similar in size to a standard #2 pencil) taken from near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. A jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving entering a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase includes checking that the sample was securely sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives from Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, hair undergoes a lower concentration extraction compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to three months, while urine tests offer a narrower detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: Hair drug testing can display drug use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
