Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Drummonds, Tennessee. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide, including all major cities, to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Such tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing alternatives.

Lately, utilizing hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has become more prevalent. Many organizations, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. Its key advantage is the extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and being almost impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair samples have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a significant history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the developing hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it indicates scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in processing a lab drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This incorporates verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid evaluation for drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal purposes. All samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the initial supply and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Any suspected positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples suspected to be positive are cleaned as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Supplies usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Drummonds, TN, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering unparalleled drug detection accuracy. Hair tests provide a longer insight into substance use, whereas urine tests often only detect recent use. This method eliminates the likelihood of sample adulteration, ensuring results are both reliable and trustworthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
