Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Eagleville, Tennessee. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers, located in cities across the nation, offer specialized hair testing services. Typically, you need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include custom testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as the method of choice for drug screening. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, with observed sample collection that's nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the prior five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. It captures a prolonged history of substance intake by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of nearly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair—the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG or additional tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair may be procured. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result include four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. It involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for potential drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples, positive results require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that yield presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample give a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug analyses can register drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • High difficulty to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Presents historical insights: Can elucidate a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors, such as hair color and personal hair growth variations, can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
