In Flat Top Mountain, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialty is in hair testing, with facilities available across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, and both scalp and body hair can be used. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing requirements.

Recently, drug tests increasingly include hair follicle analysis. It's now preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair drug testing suits zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and those on probation because it offers an extended detection period of drug use up to 90 days. The observed collection minimizes cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent mechanism for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a long-trail record of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within its growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair allows for an up to 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For additional EtG tests or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested that the specimen be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If head hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically talk about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process checks that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for misuse of drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive is necessary for legal validity. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at notably inferior concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any Screening positives is completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It reveals the pattern of substance use over a timeframe, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual variations in growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
