Located in Forks of the River, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by our nationwide network of facilities capable of conducting such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or a body source is sufficient, enabling us to analyze for substances including alcohol/ETG or customize as needed.

Lately, hair follicle assessments have become a staple in drug testing methodologies. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug evaluations over typical urine exams. These tests are chosen by businesses upholding strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probationers. Their principal advantage lies in detecting drug use over a longer span—up to 90 days—collected under supervised conditions and remain mostly tamper-proof. However, monitoring drug use within a recent 5-day window still favors urine testing for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, is relatively tough to tamper with, and is easily transportable.

A sample of 200 hair strands at a length of 1.5 inches (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically means scalp hair, while body hair covers other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample in a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that the electronic chain of custody didn’t cover.

Screening involves a quick, initial check for substances. While it’s a budget-friendly method for excluding drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be verified before it becomes court-admissible. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug usage over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is typically on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
