Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Frankewing, Tennessee. For hair drug or alcohol tests, they specialize in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor it over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies rely on hair testing due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days and reduced risk of cheating, despite the urine test's advantage for recent use detection.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing indicators within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of approximately up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken closest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and panels beyond 10, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we reference head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair describes all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The drug test processing in a laboratory encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the introductory processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. This phase involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as an initial rapid test for potential drug use. While it's an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which contributes to hair drug testing being the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for a positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair provisions and conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a briefer detection timeline.
  • Low likelihood of deception: Hair drug testing is challenging to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: This method allows for tracing drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection is not immediate: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug testing is typically priced higher than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing is Superior: In Frankewing, TN, the benefits of hair follicle testing over urine tests are clear. Hair tests offer a significantly longer detection window, capturing substance use up to 90 days back. This broader view ensures more reliable data and reduces false negatives, essential for compliance and ensuring safety in the workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Windows in drug testing give employers an insightful perspective on employee habits over time. In Frankewing, TN, hair follicle testing excels with its ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, surpassing short-term urine tests. This extended period provides a comprehensive understanding of long-term behaviors crucial for making informed staffing decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing makes hair testing a favored choice in Frankewing, TN. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are less susceptible to tampering, ensuring results are genuine and unbiased. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
