In Gallaway, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our centers across the nation are equipped to handle your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for testing. Hair tests can identify substances, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle tests have increasingly become a favored method in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine method due to their stringent zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended drug detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, accomplished in supervised settings, and resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the fiber of the elongating hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to a #2 pencil's girth) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The sequence of steps entailed in the laboratory processing of drug test results comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's ledger. This process includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), as well as completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary and expeditious assessment for drug abuse indicators. While Screening offers an economical approach to disprove drug use on most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is separated from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a cleaning process as required prior to confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests' shorter detection timeframes.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test poses considerable difficulty, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It enables the identification of drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests," the examination pertains to the hair strand rather than the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
