Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Graball, Tennessee. Our expertise lies in hair-based drug and alcohol testing, with a network of testing facilities across cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method in drug testing. This approach is favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, who opt for hair testing over urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary programs utilize these tests. A key advantage is its extended detection period for drug use, stretching up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain effective for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers an extended history of substance use by encasing biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, less prone to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

An ideal 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive result in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, as necessitated. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have briefer detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug intake over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
