Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Grand Junction, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the entire Nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, though body hair can also be viable. Hair tests are versatile and can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a staple in drug screening procedures. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly favoring this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, as well as by courts and probation services. The chief advantage of this test is its extended detection window of approximately 90 days, coupled with the fact that samples are collected under direct observation, making tampering almost impossible. However, urine tests still reign supreme for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an efficient means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures biomarkers in the developing hair strand fibers to offer a comprehensive long-term record. Positioned near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a span of up to around three months. The process of hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

Securing a 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional components, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair not be present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair incorporates all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to incorporating a sample into a lab’s system at the outset. This stage involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing up any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage for the bulk of samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Upon yielding a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair portions from the original sample are readied for Extraction. Drugs undergo extraction from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening confirmation transpires via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data provision: Capable of showing drug use patterns over time, instead of solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of indicating recent consumption: A span of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are ordinarily pricier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself focuses on the hair strand, excluding the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
