Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Green Hill, Tennessee. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide that can perform the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly using these tests over traditional urine tests. They are favored by businesses with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection timeline, which can reach up to 90 days, and samples are collected under supervision, making them almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise verifying the specimen's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we discuss head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to be legally valid. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at far lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical context: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Green Hill, TN, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine testing by offering extended detection periods, earning the trust of employers and authorities. The detection accuracy and reliability of hair testing ensure that drug use traces are identified effectively, giving a clear picture of an individual's substance history over several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
