Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Greenbrier, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair analyses, and we maintain testing facilities across all major U.S. cities for conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or other body parts can be used. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly prevalent for drug evaluations in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often require hair testing instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize these tests. Their greatest advantage is detecting drug usage for an extended period, up to 90 days, using a monitored collection process, making them virtually tamper-proof. However, screenings for recent drug use within the last five days remain more precise with urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term timeline of drug and alcohol use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a standard #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional analyses or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. When discussing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in determining the outcome of a lab-based drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial assessment and integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This step involves ensuring the sample was dispatched securely, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial examination for substance abuse. While Screening economically eliminates drug usage in most cases, a positive finding necessitates confirmation for validity in legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent verification.

If a specimen results in a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at a much more diluted concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Validation of positive results from Screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples that are presumptively positive undergo cleaning prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect over a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Records usage patterns: It documents a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair occurs around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs more cost compared to other methods.
  • Diverse results: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
