Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings, Accredited Drug Testing caters to Greenfield, Tennessee. When hair or alcohol testing is required, we excel in hair analysis. Our centers nationwide can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in drug screening methods. Employers, courts, and substance experts often prefer these over traditional urine tests. Such tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation scenarios. One key advantage is the extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with observation, making deception nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for substances used in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by enclosing biomarkers within its strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands, comparable in size to a #2 pencil and situated nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. Tasks include verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system hasn't provided.

Screening entails a preliminary, swift check for drugs of abuse. This cost-efficient method is effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, but any positive screening result must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are properly cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which detect within a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely hard, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeframe of drug usage patterns over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days following drug consumption.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur greater costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations impact drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: These tests are frequently mistaken as "hair follicle tests", yet they analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Greenfield, TN, offers superior detection accuracy when compared to urine screening. It provides a comprehensive view of an individual's drug usage over time, while a urine test may miss significant use occurring months earlier. Ideal for long-term detection, hair tests ensure reliability and enable informed decisions.

The unbeatable advantage stands in its detection period, which can cover up to 90 days, surpassing the limited window available with urine tests. Employers can rely on this method to reinforce zero-tolerance policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Greenfield, TN, gain a comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history through hair follicle testing. With an extended detection window of up to 90 days, this method is unmatched by others like urine testing, which detects recent drug use only. This expansive timeframe equips employers to make better-informed hiring decisions.

By capturing a broader snapshot of a person's habits, hair testing facilitates better workplace compliance. It's invaluable for instances where long-term substance abuse patterns need examination.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing in Greenfield, TN, reduces sample tampering risks significantly. In contrast to urine tests, which can be adulterated, hair samples offer a tamper-resistant method. The integrity of the sample is maintained throughout the process, ensuring accurate and legitimate results.

Our method minimizes opportunities for cheating, providing peace of mind for employers who need reliable data. Hair testing establishes itself as the trustworthy choice for verifying drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
