Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hampshire, Tennessee. If in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, their specialization in hair testing is supported by numerous testing centers Nationwide, ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, though body hair may also be viable. These tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening methods has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often demand hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is its longer detection window for drugs, lasting up to 90 days, collected in an observed setting, and notoriously hard to manipulate. For detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with little risk of tampering, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective measure to dismiss drug use for most samples; however, a positive indication in Screening must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary validation.

For samples testing presumptively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Positive results from the Screening process undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is also certified to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to tamper with, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical insights: Hair testing provides a timeline of drug usage patterns, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent use: A timeframe of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and does not involve the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hampshire, TN, hair follicle drug tests provide notable benefits over traditional urine tests. One major advantage is its broader detection window, allowing for the identification of drug use up to 90 days prior. This is in contrast to the limited timeframe of urine tests, which often only reflect recent use.

Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and is less susceptible to tampering. The comprehensive insight provided by hair tests makes them invaluable for employers looking for reliable data in maintaining drug-free policies. In comparison, urine tests are easier to manipulate.

Extended Detection Window

In Hampshire, TN, hair follicle testing is a preferred method for detecting substance use, offering an extended detection period. Unlike other methods, hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, providing a more thorough record of an individual's substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
