Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing is operational in Hardin Valley, Tennessee. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair analysis. With testing centers spread nationwide, we facilitate these tests across all cities. Typically, hair from the head's crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required, enabling us to test for various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent as a testing method. It's favored by numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts as an alternative to urine tests. Notably, employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs prefer this test. Hair tests are credited for their extensive detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and are extremely difficult to alter. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests still reign as the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When hair is gathered from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. Additional tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels require 150mg of hair. It's advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screening result must be validated to be used in legal proceedings. Samples identified as presumptively positive during screening require further confirmation.

When a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction stage. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
