Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hartsville/Trousdale County, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. Specializing in hair testing, we have centers across all cities Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

The prevalence of using hair follicle drug tests has grown markedly in recent years. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Specifically utilized by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary settings, hair follicle tests extend drug detection periods — up to 90 days, obtained through an observed collection process, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, for drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering use of drugs and alcohol. It offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When harvested near the scalp, it can detect substances, including alcohol, for up to an estimated three-month period. Hair is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send.

A lock measuring 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 strands (comparable in diameter to a #2 pencil), secured near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over ten, a 150mg sample is ideal. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for precision. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we discuss head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types, like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test result evaluation in a lab encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the start of integrating a sample into a lab's protocols. This stage ensures the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data tasks not included in an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substances. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal proceedings. Samples indicating a potential positive screen demand subsequent verification.

When a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the starter sample and prepped for Extraction. Extraction involves isolating drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug evaluation the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any presumptive positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, all samples indicating positive results are cleansed as needed. The lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to deception: It is significantly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical trend data: It offers a chronicle of drug use over a timeframe, beyond just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to capture recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
