Henderson, Tennessee residents can access comprehensive hair follicle drug testing through Accredited Drug Testing. Our specialty is in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with centers available across the Nation. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, preferably from the crown or any other body part, for testing. The hair test analyzes substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing approaches. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine to enforce zero-tolerance drug regulations effectively. These tests offer the upper hand due to an extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, an observed collection, and almost no room for deception. Nevertheless, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers into the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a maximum detection window of approximately 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10 tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Any sample testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitates a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical information: It provides an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color differences and individual hair growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: The test commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests" actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Henderson, TN, hair follicle testing has proven superior to traditional urine tests. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair tests cover a longer history, offering robust accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
