Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hillville, Tennessee. For those needing hair or alcohol testing, our company specializes in these services, with centers in cities Nationwide that can facilitate such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Lately, drug testing methods have shifted to include hair follicle testing more often. Employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse increasingly prefer hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Used by those with zero-tolerance policies, probationers, and courts, hair follicle tests offer a detection period of up to 90 days, collected during observed collections, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug screening in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of these substances by securing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is collected effortlessly, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. Our reference to head hair concerns solely scalp hair. Body hair incorporates all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four steps in processing a drug test outcome in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not supply.

Screening carries out an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a timeline of drug use over periods, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test genuinely evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
