Providing top-tier hair follicle drug screening services in Humboldt, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive solution for detecting drugs and alcohol. With locations across the nation, we excel in hair testing for various substances. Requirements include hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches from scalp or body, enabling detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke options.

There has been an increasing shift towards using hair follicle tests for drug screening. These tests are favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probation services prefer this method due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed process, and high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests still lead in recent use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by locking biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, it can indicate alcohol and drug use over a timeline of up to roughly 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to gauge the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of body hair (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of the specimen into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was tightly sealed and appropriately shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, however, a positive screening necessitates being confirmed to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive Screening samples demand subsequent confirmation.

Upon a sample showing presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than alternative methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a notably challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing, as necessary, before final confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations that have a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, lending more validity to results.
  • Yields historical context: It can depict a trend of drug usage over time, rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent consumption: A period of about 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and unique hair growth differences can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
