Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Irving College, Tennessee. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, we're experts in hair testing, with centers throughout the Nation available for such services. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific requirements.

The inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening procedures has become more prevalent in recent times. Hair drug tests are being mandated by various employers, courts, and addiction specialists in favor of urine tests. These tests cater to organizations with zero drug tolerance policies. Their main advantage is their extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, with a difficult-to-compromise observed collection. However, in identifying recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is recommended. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can find drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to cheat: It is notably difficult to cheat a hair drug test, leading to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It can show a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
